Seen Minority Report? It’s inspired the latest current generation of user interfaces such as the iPhone and Microsoft Surface. But that’s all a load of old rope now since they all require a physical screen. The next generation is in development, a wearable computer that is able to recognise it’s environment, any pertinent objects and project a custom user interface on anything from walls to books to loo roll and even facially identifying someone in front of you and writing a tag cloud of their interest on their t-shirt.
All this technology can be yours today for around $350 in parts. I am absolutely amazed that the lab producing this technology isn’t using anything dramatically new but instead integrating a simple camera and projector with a programmed CPU and Bluetooth data service and has come up with something dramatically special.
I don’t expect to see actual projector pendants hanging from geeky necks in the future although the custom context-aware projectable interface is something that we can see incorporated into our mobile devices within the next five to ten years.
Someone call Steve Jobs.
